Felix the Flyer
Categories: Script Readings
The inspirational true story of a young Cuban mailman who ran the 1200 miles of the Mississippi from New Orleans to St. Louis to reach his goal of running in the 1904 Olympic Marathon. To reach his goal, Felix raises funds by performing comical races against all comers. He meets up with a Southern Belle who changes the course of his personal marathon. After sailing to New Orleans, Felix loses all his money in a crap game. His self-imposed penance and training for the Olympics is to run the 1200 miles along the racially charged Mississippi river getting help from the Underground Railroad. Arriving in St. Louis during the World's Fair, Felix is first befriended by two South Africans performing in the Boar War stage show. They open Felix's eyes to the true racial nature of events like the Anthropological Games. The Felix is taken in and made mascot by the United States Weight-tossing Team who read about Felix's adventures in a newspaper story. The team helps Felix prepare for the Marathon . The Marathon itself has become one of the most infamous Olympic stories in history; filled with cheating, drug abuse, racism, torturous conditions and non-stop twists and turns that changed the very nature of Marathon races forever. Felix's comical antics and success in the overwhelming grueling conditions during the 90-degree race with only one water station is the stuff of legends. Felix is an inspiration for all underdogs seeking to cross their own finish line with pride.
